The Allied
Armies gathered up many hungry, homeless children right after the end of World
War II. They were put in large camps where the children were fed and cared for.
At night many of the kids were restless and did not sleep well.
A psychologist thought to give each child an extra piece of bread to hold
in their hand before bed. If they were still hungry they could eat more bread,
but one piece was not to be eaten - it was just to hold during the night.
The children slept much better with the assurance they would have
something to eat the next day.
King David reflects a similar feeling in the 23rd Psalm. The sheep knows
the shepherd has made plans for food and care for the next day and is able to
lie down in green pastures.
God tells us in His Word not to worry about food, shelter and clothing
for tomorrow. Seek first His kingdom and the Good Shepherd will add all these
